Triumph2000 Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 (edited) Hi all, I've been researching my Great Grandfather's war and was lucky to be given some things recently which belonged to him. He was Sgt Laurence Webster Waring - no. 94, 3/1 West Riding Divisional Cyclist Company > 57606, 18th Btn Kings Liverpool Regiment and finally 653429, Labour Corps. On the back of one of his postcards appears a list of names. The fact Laurence's name is listed there too, along with his rank, made me think these are likely to be soldiers he served with. The problem is, try as I might, I can't find any likely candidates (using my Ancestry account). I wonder whether anyone out there might be able to identify any of these men? This would help me narrow down what Laurence was up to around the time he bought the postcard. My assumption is that these may be Labour Corps men, just a hunch though. Not sure what the menu was about, either! Any ideas folks? All the best Ben ...and here's the front of the postcard: Edited 3 February , 2021 by Triumph2000
CountryJohn Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 Don't know if this helps, or is too obvious, but there was apparently a 'Maison Soupé-Varlet' restaurant in Tournehem, near Saint-Omer. https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collections/cartes-postales/hotels-restaurants/tournehem-62-maison-recommandee-hotel-restaurant-soupe-varlet-en-1906-157349958.html My guess - a celebratory meal at the restaurant, menu recorded on the postcard and signed by all attendees. Looks like a very good meal for wartime - victory celebration? John
Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 There seem to be other postcards from 'Collection Soupé-Varlet' such as this one , of Zouafques quarry near Tournehem: http://www.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/camt/fr/numerisation/donnees_num/2010_033/depart_0154_.htm#nogo I think the scene in Post #1 is different to that in the link in Post #2. However, It probably is somewhere in that area. Odd that the restaurant , and the postcard manufacturer are the same- maybe a local entrepreneur? Triumph2000 Posted 4 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2016 Very interesting points, thank you. Victory celebration crossed my mind too - I thought that by identifying any of the men it might be possible to work out when one or more of them were in the area. For his own part, Laurence was still in France with the Labour Corps until May 1919, so it could have been any time up to then I guess. This has got my mind ticking over now about the possibility of him (and the others) being given these as a memento of the occasion (his rank and name, in pencil like the menu, are not in his own handwriting) and everyone present signing each other's...who knows! Thanks again.
Loader Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 Hard to read the signatures. The name mid way down the card looks to be HELBORNE or close. Seems uncommon enough you may find a MIC for him & see what units he served with. Initial looks like D or P. If he was LC too you may be on the right path. Good luck. Triumph2000 Posted 4 November , 2016 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2016 (edited) Great to see the same view today! I have a handful of these postcards, most with similar scenes, and all have the place names scratched away or cut out entirely. For the benefit of the censor, I guess? So it sounds as though these could be 18 KLR men. I have a weekend ahead reading the war diary then to try to work out when they may have been in the area. Laurence was only in France with the battalion for 7 months before he got his Blighty wound, so that should narrow it down a bit. sotonmate Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 (edited) CHC URE. Cecil Hamilton Charteris URE. Initally Private 16687, then Sergeant, KLR . Later commissioned 2 Lieutenant South Lancashire Regiment. First landed France 7.11.1915. Distinctive and not much likelihood of another of the same name ! Survived the war and claimed his medals in 1922, and appears in ship passengers in 1958, so a longish life. From the inital photo it must be assumed that the scratching out of the place etc must be a censorship measure, as I see that the second card of the same scene has that detail. Dai Bach y Sowldiwr Posted 4 November , 2016 Share Posted 4 November , 2016 (edited) Does anyone have access to the Medal Rolls themselves, to search that block around 57600. There are at least 4 men here in that block. Edited 4 November , 2016 by Dai Bach y Sowldiwr

IPT Posted 5 November , 2016 Share Posted 5 November , 2016 I've managed to waste some time, and discover nothing. Still, it keeps me off the streets and out of trouble. If it's of any interest, almost all the men below transferred from cyclist battalions. The first 70 or so were from Yorkshire. After that, they're from the North Midlands. I suppose the fact that none of the casualties attended the dinner supports the idea that it was a victory celebration? 57600 Charles W Gallagher - died 31/3/1917 - 18th Bn 57601 John T Marsden 57602 Fred Ulliot - killed 15/6/1918 - 6th Bn 57603 Alfred Fletcher 57604 Robert M Butterwick - 18th Bn 57605 Robert Wright - died 24/6/1917 - 19th Bn 57606 57607 Sidney A Crane - killed 31/7/1917 - 18th Bn 57608 57609 Clifford Petthrick - killed 9/4/1917 - 18th Bn 57610 Stanley J ford - 18th Bn 57611 Percy Welborn 57612 Albert E Barrans 57613 Harold J Stott - 18th Bn 57614 Fred Gatecliffe 57615 Fred W Preddy - killed 16/6/1918 - 18th Bn 57616 Walter Ward - killed 29/11/1917 - 12th Bn 57617 James W Pearce 57618 Isaac Ellis 57619 Charles Firth 57620 57621 Robert B Arah 57622 William A Ascough 57623 Horace Barber 57624 Thomas F Beaumont 57625 John A C Bell - killed 9/4/1917 18th Bn 57626 George F Bentley 57627 Thomas E Boardley 57628 Robert Boyle 18th Bn 57629 57630 57631 Ernest Brown 57632 William Bolton 57633 Horace Clegg 57634 George W Clay 57635 William Corbridge discharged 19/10/1917 57636 Willie Crowther, killed 14/6/1917, 18th Bn 57637 Arthur Clark 57638 Charles G Dodworth, killed 31/7/1917 18th Bn 57639 Philip Eames, killed 8/11/1918, 4th Bn 57640 George R Robson, discharged 18/6/1918 57641 Harry Elsey 57642 Joseph Fearnley 57643 Jackson Fisher 57644 Charles Frashney, discharged 29/4/1918 57645 John R Fox 57646 Frederick Fox 57647 Arthur J Fieldhouse, killed 9/4/1917, 18th Bn 57648 Walter Greenwood 57649 Martin Hogan 57650 Frank E Holder 57651 Bertram Kemp, killed 26/4/1917, 18th Bn 57652 Ernest King 57653 John Leadbeater 18th Bn 57654 Ernest H Lupton, killed 9/4/1917, 18th Bn 57655 57656 William Neal 57657 Frank Pickersgill 57658 Harry Prust, killed 18/4/1917, 18th Bn 57659 John Rowlay 57660 George E Skevington, killed 20/7/1917 , 18th Bn 57661 John M Taylor 57662 Reginald Tordoff 57663 Alfred Ward 57664 Harold Snowden 57665 Samuel Weston 57666 John W Willey, killed 29/4/1918, 18th Bn 57667 57668 David Wormold, discharged 28/11/1917 57669 Alfred E Potter 57670 George Lindoe 57671 Jim Drake 57672 Albert Flinders 57673 Albert J Johnson, killed 30/8/1917, 17th Bn 57674 Albert Bury 57675 Leslie Stray, killed 23/4/1917, 18th Bn 57676 John P Hood 57677 Arthur E Willard, died 10/4/1917, 18th Bn 57678 Alfred H Boaden 57679 William S Carter, discharged 26/7/1918 57680 Fred Draper 57681 Bernard W Guest 57682 Arthur Hatton 57683 William F Jones 57684 Frank Lawton 57685 Fred Shaw 57686 William E Sims, killed 23/4/1917, 18th Bn 57687 John E Stringfellow 57688 Bernard L Winnicott 57689 Sidney E Appleby 57690 William L Appleby 57691 John Aram, killed 9/4/1917, 18th Bn 57692 Archie W Blakemore 57693 Maurice Brabben, killed 13/4/1917, 18th Bn 57694 Benjamin S Brearley, killed 22/9/1917, 18th Bn 57695 James H Brown 57696 Harold Buckingham, killed 9/4/1917, 18th Bn 57697 James Burge 57698 Harold Burton killed 18/4/1918, 19th Bn 57699 Sydney A Coleman
