Difficult to equate the S-M with anything British - he was, effectively a commissioned rank (albeit Viceroy's Commission, rather than King's). I suppose in a way he could be described as the native Adjutant.

Maureen & Steven, thanks for the rank insights- makes sense thinking in terms of a sort of adjutant. I think I was mixing things up with the Havildar-major.

Best, Nick

JP & Harry, this is some "tasty" detail. Really good and beautifully sourced......I feel like such an amateur.

All will be put to good use asap. If I hadn't had to have a new gas boiler installed this week I would be immediately subscribing to Ancestry!

Thanks again, Nick

I'm late in on this one but the photos in #1 put some faces to names in the October 1914 story.

Was Zahman Khan wounded on 26th Oct.....you refer to the Bn's first action? Was this more specifically also at Messines?

Would you also have Mala Khan, Amir Khan & Zaman Khan's ranks by any chance.

Acording to the Appendices, Zahman Khan was wounded on the 30th November, which is odd because in the text it refers to his wound far earlier - when the regiment came out of the Line on the 4th November. I suspect he was wounded at Messines, or possibly earlier in the fighting at Hollebeke Chateau. He was a Subedar, as were Mala Khan and Amir Khan.
