Martin Feledziak Posted 26 August , 2015 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2015 Edward PODMORE 2nd Btn Grenadier Guards Service Number 17338 Died of wounds 12 October 1915 - not sure which report is correct, the newspaper report suggests as a result of the action on the 5th October. The 2/GG went into trenches east of Vermelles on the 3rd October in support of the 2nd and 3rd Coldstreams who were in the old German trenches south of the Hohenzollern Redoubt. They were shelled heavily, 2 men killed and 5 wounded in No1 Company by 2 shells. On 4th October they were digging communication trenches within 30 yards of the Germans. On 5th October they moved into the front line and some bombing took place on both sides. On 7th in billets at Vermelles On the 8th the Battalion returned to the trenches and had to drive off an enemy attack that night. On the 10th the 2/GG carried out a bombing raid in which No1 Company took part. The party managed to bomb its way 150 yards up the German trench and the position was consolidated after all the bombs had run out. Wounded had to be brought back over the top, the trenches being too narrow for the stretcher bearers. On the morning of the 11th the Germans counter-attacked but failed and contented themselves with shelling the lost ground http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=127559

Martin Feledziak Posted 18 September , 2015 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2015 Wilfred POOLE Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Service Number 74450 It would appear that Wilfred was killed on duty when his mule train was subjected to hostile shelling. I have read the papers relating to a Court of Enquiry assembled in the wagon lines, 190 Heavy BTY on 6th February 1918. Several pension and war service records also survive. According to a statement of service Wilfred was called up on 26th March 1916 and posted Gunner on 25th April 1916. A stamp indicates 182 Heavy Battery RGA. He is shown BEF Salonica 20 November 1916. Wilfred is at rest, Sarigol Military Cemetery, Greece.
