connaughtranger Posted 5 July , 2009 Share Posted 5 July , 2009 The Battalion was involved in a busy period in early October he could have been wounded on a number of occasions: The 2/GG went into trenches east of Vermelles on the 3rd October in support of the 2nd and 3rd Coldstreams who were in the old German trenches south of the Hohenzollern Redoubt. They were shelled heavily, 2 men killed and 5 wounded in No1 Company by 2 shells. On 4th October they were digging communication trenches within 30 yards of the Germans. On 5th October they moved into the front line and some bombing took place on both sides. On 7th in billets at Vermelles On the 8th the Battalion returned to the trenches and had to drive off an enemy attack that night. On the 10th the 2/GG carried out a bombing raid in which No1 Company took part. The party managed to bomb its way 150 yards up the German trench and the position was consolidated after all the bombs had run out. Wounded had to be brought back over the top, the trenches being too narrow for the stretcher bearers. On the morning of the 11th the Germans counter-attacked but failed and contented themselves with shelling the lost ground
