jscott Posted 22 April , 2015 Share Posted 22 April , 2015 Hi all Just wondering if anyone has any idea about this unit marking on a P03 bayonet I recently acquired. I think it is a reference to the 3rd School of Musketry, but have no idea what the "F" refers to. Also Im struggling to find any information on musketry schools in WW1. I suspect that this may be an Australian used bayonet - could anyone suggest a website with more information on this? Thanks! J
trajan Posted 22 April , 2015 Share Posted 22 April , 2015 Well, S.M. is School of Musketry - according to the 1904 regulations as re-printed in the 1888/1903 book, but there is nowt like a single 'F' in there... BUT, could it be for 'France'? It seems that there was a France-based section of the School of Musketry in the GW - see: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=152620 Also: http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=186528 post no. 3 Trajan PS: looks a nice find! jscott Posted 22 April , 2015 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2015 Thanks Trajan. Its a possibility I guess - I haven't seen this formulation before either. I know its a bit of a long shot to work it out but am hoping that someone has stumbled across this before.
Lancashire Fusilier Posted 22 April , 2015 Share Posted 22 April , 2015 J, A very nice bayonet, especially with the pommel marking, and as Trajan has said, the mark ' S.M. ' is for the School of Musketry. Regards, LF
