Hi everyone who has helped in this search.

Today I visited the Staffs regimental museum and looked at the war diary of the 1/5 battalion and what remains of my grandfathers diary.

it appears he was gassed twice in 1917 and spent 3 weeks at a Canadian hospital although this is not recorded in the war diary but the places are - Lievin being one and I was fascinated to read of the attack at Gommecourt - what a terrible day for both the South and North Staffs battalions. His diary also records other matters - he mentions the death of Lt Thorne who was reported missing in the war diary and records being drenched in a liquid in some woods just behind the front lines after being gassed.

But thanks to all of you for your help

Zillebeke was obviously where my granddad was after he was wounded - I've also found at the museum the piece from a newspaper reporting his being killed in action even though he was not
