Admin kenf48 Posted 19 September , 2014 Admin Share Posted 19 September , 2014 In 1911 the 14 year old boys in my extended family were either '(loco') drivers' or 'hewer helpers/assistants'; by the time they were 16 they had graduated to hewer! Shiny Posted 20 September , 2014 Author Share Posted 20 September , 2014 Thanks a lot everyone. Dave, I know which colliery he worked in, it was Preston Colliery in North Shields. It would be good to find out if the owners, UA Ritson, had applied for permission to keep the men at home but that might be asking too much I think. Michael Michael I don't know the answer to your question, it would be very interesting to find out about the exemptions. I have found the below website where it might be worth searching through the topics. I'm going to have a look through the site at some point but thought it may be something that may give you what you are looking for. https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=mining-history Dave
