Gibbo Posted 29 September , 2007 Share Posted 29 September , 2007 10 sqn started 1918 equipped with the Armstrong Whitworth FK8, which it retained until 2/19. The book says that it received Bristol F2b Fighters in 6/18, retaining them until 10/18. This puzzles me as I thought that squadrons in France were by then equipped with an single type. It began the year at Abeele, where it had been based since 18/11/17, & had the following moves: 12/4/18 to Droglandt 22/9/18 to Abeele 21/10/18 to Menin 5/11/18 to Staceghem 15/11/18 to Menin 1/12/18 to Reckem 17/2/19 to Ford Junction as a cadre 15/10/19 to Croydon 31/12/19 disbanded. Gibbo Posted 2 October , 2007 Share Posted 2 October , 2007 59 squadron: 21/6/16 Formed at Narborough - nucleus from 35 sqn., used various aircraft. 2/17 RE8 (until 8/19) 13/2/17 to St. Omer 23/2/17 to La Bellevue 1/6/17 to Le Hameau 15/6/17 to Longavesnes 15/7/17 to Mons-en-Chaussee 29/10/17 to Longavesnes 30/11/17 to Estrre-en-Chausse 16/12/17 to Courcelles-le-Comte 22/3/18 to Lealvillers 26/3/18 to Fienvillers 12/4/18 to Vert Galand 4/18 Bristol F2b Fighter (until 8/19) - looks like my comment above about single types was wrong as this is another squadron that had two in 1918. 17/9/18 to Beugnatre 14/10/18 to Caudry 29/11/18 to Gerpinnes 14/3/19 to Bickendorf 3/5/19 to Duren 4/8/19 Disbanded. Michael (Later) OK, OTF 21-2 means Over The Front, vol. 21, No 2. I'm following this up. Many thanks for the clue. Michael

Starlight Posted 12 December , 2007 Share Posted 12 December , 2007 Hi Michael, It was the prototype DH2 that was sent to Number 5 squadron for evaluation in late July 1915 so it must have been very embarrassing for the squadron that it was captured intact by the Germans only two weeks later. This delayed the introduction of the DH2 in the allied line-up of aircraft and it was not until January 1916 that another DH2 was sent to the Western Front for evaluation. Interestingly enough Number 5 squadron (which was still based at Abeele) was given a second chance at evaluating the DH2 alongside the FE8, a new and fairly similar new fighter, before the DH2 was delivered in numbers to other squadrons - but this is another story.
