Hi Chris,

Any info about 3 Sqn would be appreciated

Colin

Colin, as you probably know the elder McCudden brothers went to France with 3 Sqn in Aug 1914. Jimmy covers the period upto end 1915 with 3 Sqn in his autobiograpy "Flying Fury: 5 Years with the RFC"

If you have the time, I would be very grateful for any info you could look up on no 5 Sqdn, through to end of 1917?

My great uncle went to France with the squadron in 1914, but later returned to the UK to take up a training post and was killed in an accident at Rendcomb aerodrome in Gloucestershire in 1917.

Best regards

I would like some information about 16 Squadron, too.

I am researching Captain Robert Maxwell Pike, R.F.C., who was shot down near Bellewarde (or Hooge) on 9th August, 1915 while "making a reconnaisance from l'Abelle(?)". Do you have anything about him, David?

Hi,

Captain Robert Maxwell PIKE, nr. 5 Sqn - 'B' Flight from Abeele airfield, was shot down near Eksternest (Zonnebeke)

His DH2 had not a single bullet hole, but PIKE was shot in the head.

It was the future ace Theo OSTERKAMP, then with II.MFA at Moorsele, who dropped a message near St. Omer, announcing the death of PIKE.

That's very interesting! I thought he was in 16 Squadron. Where does this information come from, and when was the message received?

According to what I have been able to find on the internet, the DH2, also known as a de Havilland Scout, first flew in the summer of 1915 and was not introduced into service until February, 1916. Could Pike have been flying one in August, 1915, which is when he was killed?

Hi Michael,

PIKE was indeed shot down on 9/8/1915 flying DH2 nr.4732.

THeo OSTERKAMP dropping a message is briefly told in his book 'Du oder Ich', Berlin 1938.

Thanks for that, Gibbo,

So 16 Squadron never had DH 2s, and were never stationed at Abele. Perhaps he was in 5 Squadron after all, who were at Abele/Abeele in August, 1915.

Could you please give us the aircraft in use by 5 Squadron? Chris gave the postings in an earlier reply.

Michael,

I darsay you are fairly new on this section of the forum, one thing you can rely on is Cnock's information - he is a respected WW1 Aviation researcher and author who chooses not to use his real name.

5 sqn's aircraft & dates during which they were used:

Avro Type E 7/13 to 7/14

Longhorn 7/13 to 8/14

Henry Farman F.20 7/13 to 3/15

SE2A 1/14 to 3/14

Sopwith 3 Seater 2/14 to 8/14

BE1 ?/14 to 8/14

Tabloid 6/14 to 8/14

Avro 504 7/14 to 10/15

BE8 8/14 to 9/14

Henry Farman F.27 9/14 only

Bristol Scout 9/14 to 10/14

Martinsyde S1 1/15 to 8/15

Voisin LA 2/15 to 3/15

Bleriot Parasol 3/15 to 5/15

Vickers FB5 3/15 to 1/16

Bristol Scout ?/15 to 3/15

Caudron GIII 4/15 to 5/15

DH2 7/15 to 8/15

BE2C 8/15 to 4/17

FE8 12/15 to 5/16

DH2 1/16 to 5/16

BE2D 6/16 to ?/17

BE2E 1/17 to 6/17

BE2F 1/17 to 6/17

BE2G 1/17 to 6/17

RE8 6/17 to 9/19

Bristol F2b Fighter 3/19 to 10/19

So it had 2 spells of using the DH2, the first of which included August 1915, when Captain Pike was killed.

February 1916 is when the first unit equipped wholly with DH2s, 24 sqn., became operational. It was the first unit of any air force to be consist entirely of single seat fighters. Other units, including 5 sqn. had, however, previously used the DH2 as part of their mixed equipment.

Mike

Asking how somebody knows something does not imply doubt.

As a researcher himself, Cnock would understand that, if a fact is to be quoted in a research paper or book, its origin must be given. In this case, he gave me the name of the book and its author, place of publication and the date, which is what I needed.

Many thanks for that information about 5 Squadron's aircraft, Gibbo. It is the last piece in this jigsaw. Pike's obituary notice in his local paper said that he was flying a new (type of) aeroplane, and that fits in.

If it doesn't hurt your feelings, could you please let me have the name of the book you are quoting, author or editor's name, publisher and date and place of publication?
