Nurses on Hospital Ships at Gallipoli

Hi Alf McM,

I do check the TNA MIC first for a 15 Star – been thinking how to quicken up the process, so your idea is a good one. I do not have Ancestry access and use FindMyPast ‘pay as you go’, so I have to be certain that what I download is worth paying for.

(I’m starting a new "Gloucester Castle" post as cannot find an appropriate existing one)

Hi Frev

In the “Assaye” section you mention Mary Agnes DAY - Assaye & Gloucester Castle.

Her service on Gloucester Castle which I think was from 02/11/16 to 04/03/17, outside the Gallipoli period, but do you have any other names of nurses on board Gloucester Castle up to March 1917? (Day also served on Lanfranc)

Just to clarify – do you think Pocock was saying the staff i.e. Foley, Frost, etc commenced service on Assaye from 21/07/15 or they commenced service before that date and were already on board?

Have you come across Florence Mary DODERY? – another Australian Q.A.I.M.N.S.R. I believe she was on board Gloucester Castle from sometime in Dec 15 to 07 May 16.

Hi ZeZe

In her diary Bessie POCOCK writes on the 17/7/1915: Last night orders to say that we were to leave Alexandria 9am train for Port Said.  Myself in charge & 7 others going on H.Ship “Assaye”.  They boarded that afternoon.  They didn’t sail until the 26th.

Sorry, I do have the correct info on Mary DAY, including her time on the Lanfranc in her individual file – sometimes my cross-referencing is all over the place, or non-existent!

Yes, I have Florence DODERY as listed on the Gloucester Castle in 1916, but hadn’t yet done any indepth research on her.

With databases of over 2,000 AANS nurses and another 1,000+ Aussie women who served O/S in various ways, including the following list of those that served in the QAIMNSR: https://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/browse/groupstories/9960

I sometimes get a little bogged down – especially since they are only a small part of my overall research! [Excuses, excuses, haha!]

Gloucester Castle: (1916, 1917)

*CASHIN, Alice Alanna / Eleanor: https://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/browse/person/904240

Joined 26/6/1916 – Matron when it was torpedoed 1917

*TRENAMAN, Elsie Maud – Sister, QAIMNSR

On her when she was torpedoed 1917 – [haven’t completed my file on her]

Some more nurses extracted from my databases:

*LOWICK, Essie Irene – Sister, QAIMNSR

Clan McGillivray 1915 – Dunluce Castle 23/12/1915 https://discoveringanzacs.naa.gov.au/browse/person/901892

*EDGELL, Theodora Grace – Staff Nurse, QAIMNSR

“….thence I was sent on HMHS ‘Massilia’ to Salonika, Lemnos & Gallipoli, whence we took about 700 sick & wounded 2nd and 3rd Dec 1915, & conveyed them to Malta & Gibralta.”

[From an Application for Grant in respect of Service in the Imperial Army, 1920 – ANA file P1868]:

*BENNETT, Frances Agnes – Sister, QAIMNSR

Hospital Ship Mauretania – appointed Sub-matron of the Mauretania in Nov 1915 https://archival.sl.nsw.gov.au/Details/archive/110343996

*STOW, Rosalind Randolph Eppes (Linda) – BRC / Staff Nurse QAIMNSR

HS Karapara 27/8/1915 to 22/2/1916

“Later she spent six interesting months’ service on a British hospital ship on the Mediterranean Sea during the Gallipoli campaign.”

*ORR, Elizabeth (RRC) – A/Matron QAIMNSR

Hosp Ships (Mediterranean) from Aug 1915 https://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/orr-elizabeth-lizzie-13141

Cheers, Frev

Edith SHIPP is Sister Edith Annie SHIPP, Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.

Mary DAVITT is Sister Mary DAVITT, Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.

ELGAR is Sister Elizabeth Beatrice ELGAR, Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.

Regards,

Alf McM

ZeZe,

In your'likely' list, Acting Matron Kathleen MANN served on the "Devanha" from 8th October 1915 until at least 28th January 1916.

She is mentioned in 2 chapters in 'Women in the War Zone - Hospital Service in the First World War' by Anne Powell.

Sister DODD is mentioned on 22nd October

Sister CARTER is mentioned on 13th December.

Regards,

Alf McM

Hi all, Good on you Frev for posting all that info - it's like looking at my lists. When there is a new list I will compare with mine and see if I have anything to add. cheers, Kirsty

Apologies in advance if this is not quite the right thread to post an Embarkation Return for HT Dilwara below, but it mentions QAIMNS Reserve and I thought it may be of interest.

Alan

Hi

An updated list of nurses who are likely to have served on a hospital ship during the Gallipoli campaign – thanks to Alf McM & Frev for their input. Any additions / corrections welcome.

Unfortunately I couldn’t just add a new names list due to all the changes on the existing list but any further names I’ll keep separate.
