6th Shropshires Posted 10 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 10 May , 2013 Hi Phil The three officers are recorded in the Regimental History has having been killed during the action at Bazentin Ridge Captain Sylvester was in Command of "B" Coy and Captain Wright was in Command of "A" Coy. 2nd Lt. Davies belonged to "B" Coy. All the other men appear in casualty lists in two addision of the Ludlow Advertiser the 2nd & 9th September (except for Pte. Dowley who I have not yet come across, some men are missing from these lists, my own Great Uncle who was killed with the 1st Battalion on 20th Nov 1917, is missing from the lists that record other men killed and wounded at that time). I had started work on the two lists above a few months back but both are very large ones numbering 615 other ranks consisting of several battalions, I have not fully finnished working on them but can say the dates range from the 8th July to about the 20th July for the 2nd September issue and from 10th July to 6th of August for the 9th Sept issue, so I am happy to say all the above were wounded between the 13th -20th July, except for Pte Dowley, I can not be that sure when he was wounded. 2li Posted 13 May , 2013 Share Posted 13 May , 2013 Cheers Annette that gives me something to work with, regarding Ludlow lads commemorated on the St. Leonards war memorial do you have anything on these lads ie newspaper obits all the best PHIL Private, George Edwards, 5188, “D” Coy 1ST K.S.L.I. 6th Shropshires Posted 16 May , 2013 Author Share Posted 16 May , 2013 Hi Phil I do not have the obits of any of the above, my main aim at moment is recording all the names in the wounded lists, which is time consuming because I have to do it by hand and then type info. into datebase. What I will do is keep my eye open for the above mens obits has I look for wounded lists. One thing I can tell you about George Haywood is that in the 20th Feb 1915 issue the paper gives a list of men who are in the armed forces, 13583 George Haywood is recorded but also a 13583 George Verlander of 123 Tower Street, I thought there was a printing mistake with the number. I looked for Verlander in M.I.C. but found nothing but at later point I found Annie Verlander, who was boading with John Hayward in 1901 census at 123 Lower Galdeford, so put two and two together and concluded that 13583 George Haywood & 13583 George Verlander are same man, so if you looking through any other papers for him it would be worth looking under both surnames. Also Corporal, William Griffiths, 200498, had twin brother who also served in the 1/4TH K.S.L.I., they were 200382 George & 200381 Charlie Griffiths.
