Nice group. Was this up with a major auction house about months ago?

My friend (a Hancock) collects to his surname and I remember seeing a group (similar to this one) in a catalogue.

Neil

Neil,

This M.M. group was previously sold by the London Medal Auction House of Dix Noonan Webb ( DNW ).

I thought it was.... Very nice group mate.

If you're ever thinking of moving it on, I could tell my friend who would probably be interested.

Nice group

Can anyone give a precise date or Army Order reference for when the stripes were added to the long service medal's ribbon? Various sources suggest either 1916 or 1917. Reason for asking: an acquaintance's grandfather's group of 1914 Star trio and LSGC has the plain crimson ribbon. He was discharged in early April 1917 and I'm trying to work out whether this was before or after the ribbon changed.

Thanks for any help

Ian

That is a smashing combo; the 14 Star & bar (i know i know) coupled with an IGS, Long Runner AND gallantry makes this a scarce grouping imho.

Out of interest does he have MM as post nominals on the IGS or LSGC?

Rough summary of 1/KRRC activity Aug-Sep 1918 ...

04 Aug Relieved from front line by 1/RoyalBerks. 2 coys to Reserve positions at MONCHY AU BOIS and 2 coys to Suppport Line at QUESNOY FARM. Several days of reorganisation, working parties and training followed.

12 Aug Returned to front line relieving 1/Royal Berks and taking over whole 99 Brigade frontage.

14 Aug 02:30hrs Raid on German outpost line S of AYETTE held by 453rd RIR. 2 platoons from A Coy, 1/KRRC in conjunction with King's Regiment.

(4 named MM awards from this raid are listed on 05 Oct War Diary page, but not Cpl Gilbert HANCOCK)

14 Aug 16:55hrs Strong patrols sent out by D Coy & some of A Coy to probe after raid. Fighting around COURCELLES ALLEY leading to reinforcement before eventual withdraw. All parties back in front line by 23:35hrs.

17 Aug Relieved by 2/S Staffs and moved to billets at La CAUCHIE.

20 Aug Orders received that btn will act as brigade reserve battalion in the forthcoming attack. Moved to start position on AYETTE-BUCQOY ROAD at 17:30hrs. Btn HQ established at F.16.d.75.90 (Ayette sheet)

21 Aug 04:55hrs attack opened. Btn acting in support to 1/Royal Berks assaulting COURCELLES.

21 Aug Btn taken out of line and rested at the PURPLE LINE for 24 hours

23 Aug Attack on SAPIGNIES, BEHAGNIES and ERVILLERS. Btn taking up moving flank guard role on right flank of 5 Brigade in touch with 1/HLI west of COURCELLES. Btn coys assisted by a tank lead attack to the west of GOMIECOURT around A.28.D. Position consolidated in a sunken road for the night with contact with 37th Div (Lincs) on right and 5 Brigade (24/RF) on left. ~600 enemy prisoners taken (nearly 1.5 times the fighting strength of the btn), as well as 200 machine guns and 6 artillery pieces.

24 Aug Attack on MOREY COPSE, supporting 1/Royal Berks, after forced march via GOMIECOURT and ERVILLERS.

25 Aug Relieved during night of 24/25 by 24/Y&L and returned to bivouacs between COURCELLES and AYETTE.

26 Aug In rest at these bivouacs

02 Sep Moved up to 2000yds west of VRAUCOURT ready for forthcoming attack

03 Sep 05:20hrs Attack towards ridge between LAGNICOURT and MORCHIES taking EYE COPSE at 07:15hrs. Btn continued to push forward until told to stand fast approx 1000 yds SW of MORCHIES with right flank on CHAUFOURS WOOD. 6 Brigade advanced through them accompanied by cavalry and Whippet tanks.

04 Sep 07:00hrs Btn movd forward to just N of BAPAUME-CAMBRAI road near BEAUMETZ. That evening took over the HINDENBURG LINE at BETTY AVENUE and KELLETT TRENCH near DEMICOURT west of the Canal du Nord relieving 1/Kings and 17/RF.

05 Sep Patrols probing beyond KEY TRENCH. Much enemy attack and KRRC counter-attack.

06 Sep Strong enemy counter-attack. Withdrew from BEATTY POST, but almost immediately re-occupied it.

(05 Oct War Diary lists awards arising from these September actions around Demicourt - 4 DCMs are named, 3 MMs and 1 Bar to MM are mentioned but not named - this is probably Hancock's)

07 Sep Into reserve to NE of BEAUMETZ.

08 Sep Brigade relieved. Btn moved into quarters in BEAUMETZ itself.

I will check the KRRC Chronicles for more detail, but scant detail is published in the Chronicle on MMs in the latter part of the war, so I am not optimistic. It'll be some days anyway, as my library is out of reach just now!

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

I really appreciate all your research, hopefully you will find a mention of Cpl. Hancock's KRRC MM.

Mark,

Does the Registered Number 68/121/737 or the Schedule Number 204130 as shown on Cpl. Hancock's Military Medal award index card mean anything as it relates to the KRRC records/archives ?

Hi L.F.,

I think that David was referring to the impressed naming when he asked about 'post nominals', ie. are the IGS and LSGC named to Hancock, M.M. or just Hancock.

Regards,

Robert

David

David,

I checked the medal rims on the IGS and LSGS and on both, there is no ' MM ' after the surname ' Hancock '.

I have the Sgt. Gilbert Hancock's Medal Index Card, and the London Gazette for the award of his Military Medal.

His Reg. No. with the King's Royal Rifle Corps was 10414, and with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry Reg. No. 6837570.

I know that he served both in Flanders and France from 13 August, 1914.

Any other information or photographs would be greatly appreciated.

Cpl. G. Hancock's Military Medal card, and his London Gazette entry for schedule No. 204130 published 11 February, 1919 shows he received his Military Medal for Bravery in the Field during the Battle of Amiens, 8th August to 3rd September 1918.

Does any member have the War Diaries for the Kings Royal Rifle Corps covering the Battle of Amiens during this period of 8 Aug - 3 September, 1918 ? I am hoping to find out the details of Cpl. G. Hancock's Military Medal award ?

Hi, it is fantastic to see Gilbert's medal group. Gilbert was my Great Grand Mothers brother. They had two other brothers, one of whom Hubert Bertram Hancock served with the South Wales Borderers and died in Flanders on June 4th 1917. Before the war both Gilbert and Hubert were miners in South Wales.

Tony,

Welcome to the Forum, and I am so pleased that you were able to see your relative's Military Medal grouping, which is still in my collection.

Do you have any photographs of Gilbert Hancock, who I think was your Great Grand Uncle, if that is the correct term ? If so, I would love to see them.

Kind regards,

LF
