So back to my original post regarding Edward Russell. If he died as an internee (lets not say POW) where would he most likely have been buried? Surely with the camaraderie and sense of community within the internees they would have provided a headstone of some sort of marker for his grave wherever it was?

It appears that I enough documentation to put him forward. If I have the right man then I also know where he was buried.

He has now been put forward to CWGC along with 26 other interned merchant seaman

Excellent Chris. It seems there are too many anomalies with other Merchant Seamen's records for them to be left off the CWGC database.

These were an odd group as they were in the main interned at the very beginning of the war. Obviously no one at the BOT thought fit to submit them as war dead. One is a very border line case as his ship struck a mine off the German coast on the 3rd August 1914.

Everyone who contributed to this thread you will be happy to know that Captain Edward Russell has now been accepted by the CWGC and added to their database, along with many others that Chris Harley mentions in a later post.
