Hello -

1. Open Ancestry website.

2. On the top bar, click on Search and a drop-down menu will appear...on the drop-down click on "Census and Electoral Rolls"

3. On the right hand side, half way down, under "Featured Data and Collections" click on "1911 England Census"

4. On the right hand side, under "Browse this Collection" in the box headed "County" click on "Military" and under "Civil Parish" click on "All"

5. Click on "India"...wait a few seconds and the front page should appear....there should be a thin bluish-grey bar immediately above the image with Military> India> Page 1 of 1114 2905 pages with navigation arrows lef and right....by typing in the box with the page number it should take you straight to that page....

If you can't see it following these instructions you might want to try using a different internet browser...I use Chrome..... the only other explanation I can think of is that not-subscribers might not be able to see the navigation bar.. not sure if there are scaled levels of access... I have full access but when I log out I can't get back beyond stage 4 above.

MG

I can get either the 1114 pages or the 2905 pages by following your instructions. Thanks for that - it's been frustrating me for a while.

I have found the 10th Hussars on p293 in the former (summary sheets) and p783 (inidviduals) in the latter.

On the subject of summary pages one thing has been confusing me for a while. Genes Reunited and 1911census.co.uk both record the 10th Hussars as being in Lucknow, India, a place where, as far as I know, the XRH was never stationed. The actual image of the summary record in Ancestry shows them as being in Rawal Pindi which is what I would have expected. Why would Lucknow have been recorded? Is that perhaps where the whole Indian census operation was co-ordinated? (Incidentally, if you attach an overseas military 1911 Census record to a person in an Ancestry tree it simply gives England as location, which is pretty useless.)

It might be the equivalent of the registration district in England (even there there can be unexpected things, Windsor RD includes some parts of northern Surrey around the time of the 1911 census for example). It may also reflect command hierarchy in India. Looking at the actual catalogue entry on The National Archives' website may help to understand how the census was organised in India

Correction: The XRH begin on p769 (or maybe their wives on p768?), not p783.

1st Btn A&S Highlanders. Can anyone help please I thought from family stories the A&S H were in India in 1911. Have ploughed through the pages trying to find them with no success.

Have I missed them or is my information on their location incorrect?
