my wifes great uncle was captured ther in fighting around the slag piles spent some time in pow camps in germany and then escaped with another canadian made their way to holland and back to england, he was awarded mm for the escape as well as his companion. have been in vicinity of lens a couple of times but did not tour the city.

I am new to this forum ,but when I see the carnage created by all sides it amazes me that any human could survive such carnage, and thank you for uploading these images Cnock.

Cnock , just looked through this thread and found it absolutley rivetting. I was particularily taken with the pictures of Kemmel and the church tower of Wytschaete as my Grandfathers Battery ( 108 heavy battery RGA ) were according to the unit war diary ordered to knock down the chaurch tower from there position at Kemmel, but were unable to do it initially as the ammuntion they were using was ineffective... whats more I have just returned from Ypres after touring around some of the sites in your postcards, so this has given me a new perspective on the site I visited especially hill 60, 62 and snactuary woods.
