during a major sort out of one of my boxes found the 1998 book Walsall Servicemen 1914-18 by Sue Satterthwaite in the back it has a list of servicemen whos photos appear in either the Walsall Observer or South Staffordshire Chronicles. The info is name, village/town, why mentioned( ie died, wounded decorated, serving or pow )and what date the paper was printed. If anyone wants look ups I'm more than happy to do them

Hi Perce

I don't have all of his details to hand at the moment, but could you look up Private Abner JOBBER, Grenadier Guards for me please? I understand from the 1901 census that he was from Willenhall, Staffs.

If you're interested, I can furnish you with what info. I have on him when I get back home (he was discharged sometime in 1915 with wounds).

Many thanks

Ed

The only mention for a Richard Baker are in 1915 but Frank Bytheway of Whitehall road gets 4 mentions

26-6-15 awarded DCM

28-8-15 awarded Russian medal

11-12-15 awarded medal

19-8-16 Killed

so I wonder if they used the same photo 4 times

will put the baker info up if you want it but think its too late to be your boy

Perce, great news. I'd be interested in what you have on both Bytheway and Baker. Richard Baker was RSM of the 1st South Staffs when they disembarked in October 1914 and died at Armagh Wood on 7 November 1914.
