Crawford worked with aerial photographs of the trenches in 3rd Army maps, and then later as an observer in the RFC - and it was this that gave him the idea for aerial archaeology. (He also used to collect flints etc. from the trenches) I'm writing a book about Crawford and am trying to find out about aerial photographs of crop-sites etc. of the Western front now - any leads gratefully received!
