Hello Spirit,

Sorry for the delay in replying--I've just returned from holiday.

A "Miss Critchley-Salmonson" appears in private records on a partial list of volunteer staff serving at Hopital Temporaire d'Arc-en-Barrois. Several years ago I deduced that her name was Dorothy May but I have no additional information about her service in France.

Her BRCS personnel record has just become available on this site:

http://www.redcross.org.uk/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War

Unfortunately the card for "Doris Critchley-Salmonson" is nearly blank but might turn up later under "Salmonson" as work on this site continues to develop.

A digital copy of her medal card is available in the First World War Service Medal Rolls Index through the National Archives Documents Online. Catalogue reference is: WO 372/23. Image reference: 37399/5149.

Several hundred volunteers served at Hopital Temporaire, 1915-1919, and collecting records is slow-going; looking for a pot of gold to fund the medal records!

Good luck.

Marjorie

Norman,

I would be indebted if you could provide me with information about Ruth Jameson. I only have her name listed at Arc-en-Barrois as "Miss Jameson". Many thanks.

Thank you all for this information. Just received a call from Penelope regarding a commemoration in France in their honour. Wish I had more time for research

Hello Gopsell,

I was just in Arc-en-Barrois for the July 4-5 centennial commemoration of Hopital Temporaire d'Arc-en-Barrois [local press and adverts referred to as "Hopital Militaire"] You might take a look at the links I've posted below to get an idea of the scope of the event. I've been working with the village for several years supplying them with core archival narratives and documents that were used as the foundation for designing events for the commemoration: an historical exhibition in the Chateau d'Arc-en-Barrois, a dramatic theatre performance based on historical events and performed in the chateau, publication of a 150 page commemorative history of the hospital. The French postal service also released a first day cover commemorating the hospital.

The illustrated commemorative history of "Hopital Militaire Anglais d'Arc-en-Barrois" was published on 30 June by the Haute-Marne department's local press. It's an abridged narrative history of the hospital (1914-19) done as a collaborative work, much of it launched from my original archival research and document/photograph sources. Published in French and might soon be available through http://cahiershautmarnais.hautetfort.com/archive/2015/06/index.html

If you'd like more information about my research go to my new website http://desrosierhistory.com/

The site includes a comprehensive name list of the more than 350 British/Canadian/ANZAC/American nurses (sisters)/surgeons/orderlies/VADs who served at Hopital Temporaire d'Arc-en-Barrois (1915-19)

I note that you have a Heathfield in your list of unknown workers. I have the medals of Florence Heathfield who served in France throughout the war. She was at Fort Mahon under the UFF and in Serbia mid 1915. "Other theatres" from December 1915 to June 1916 when she joined the Michelham in Paris.

Does the period fit with her mention in Arc ?? As far as I know, she is the only Heathfield who served with the FRX.

Norman,

Thanks for the info. The name "Heathfield" appears on an undated handwritten list of Arc volunteers who were paying room and board. I know Florence Heathfield's official record suggests she is the only Heathfield with the FRX. But as I can't confirm her first name and an Arc connection with a second source I don't include her on the confirmed list.

nor sure if this forum is still running ?

i am researching an ancestor Dr Leslie Haden Guest's work in WW1 with Anglo French Red Cross committee. i know he set up the hospital at Majestic Hotel in Paris and one researcher said he also set up a few other hospitals in France to treat wounded soldiers. i read about the hospital at Arc en Barrois and wondered if he was involved in setting that up or the hospitals in Nevers and Limoges?

any info appreciated.

thanks,

Martin

Welcome to the Great War Forum which is very much still running.

As you have seen this thread is eight years old and sadly at least two of the contributors have died, hence the R.I.P. against their name.  Other contributors have not visited for many years.

However if they have retained the same Email address you may use the GWF personal messaging system to contact them once you have two posts.

We do not hold details on anyone marked as 'Guest'.

There are four references to Dr Leslie Haden Guest in the online archives of the Journal of the RAMC: they are open access.

And these are references called up by searching on "Haden Guest" in the abstracting index Pubmed Europe. I'm guessing the first may be obituaries, but on my phone filtering out material outwith the Great War time phone is a bit of a faff, so I'm afraid you will have to scroll through the lot. This may also have retrieved the JRAMC material.

PS Searching for the phrase "Haden Guest" on the forum will retrieve a few older threads mentioning him.
