Muerrisch Posted 26 October , 2009 Share Posted 26 October , 2009 Ah! Conductors! It is true that Conductors were the very first warrant officers, in 1879, 2 years before the other new ones were created. However, the official precedence lists throughout the ages have always bracketed them with [inter alia, and at different times] Master Gunners 1st class, Schoolmasters, Garrison Sergeant Majors, Academy Sergeant Majors ..... I am working from memory and there may well be others. Some editions of QVR go to the extent of pointing out that the arrangement of titles in this top bracket of WOs is purely alphabetical, giving Conductors a head start. centurion Posted 26 October , 2009 Share Posted 26 October , 2009 However if one was a humble private, gunner, sapper etc and a man with a single stripe was ordering you to do something would any of this make any difference?
joseph Posted 26 October , 2009 Share Posted 26 October , 2009 It most certainly would, certain Lance Corporals only had direct authority over such soldiers as may be specially placed under their orders. Regards Charles
Greg Posted 27 October , 2009 Share Posted 27 October , 2009 The Gunners also had 'Second Captains' in the mid nineteenth century. Greg
