Remembered Today:

UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT

Hello,

as I said no Carbonit bomb, and since I could not find it in almost 100 sketches of WWI bombs, the answer was at sea (the fins)

Just a sterile discussion with Centurion

Thanks Taucher!

Regards,

Cnock

Thanks to everyone for their input, and to Taucher for solving the problem.

There is now no doubt in my mind that the rusty item at the bottom of my garden is a VMFI.

All the bolts and screws shown on Taucher's diagram are there, and it even has a couple of wires coming out of the end of it.

Since I live within 200 yards of the sea it is quite understandable that this item might have been washed up on the beach, carried home by someone, and ultimately dumped.

The only question that I would now ask is - when were these things being used? WW1, WW2?

I dont know about WW1 or WW2 but it nearly started WW3 LOL. Nice to see this thread resolved, what will make me chuckle is when its found to be WW2 and the thread closed for being off topic.

Martin,

They where never used during the wars. They where used on exercise mines only.

When used first i don't know.During the years 70 and 80 till early 90 they where quite common in use.

They are now no longer used and have been replaced by other flares.

Hi Cnock, reading back through the thread I see a diagram you posted on #15, The dimensions are a little bit difficult to read, but I assume they must be in mm?

Thanks again,

Regards,

Camel
