George Armstrong Custer Posted 23 February , 2009 Share Posted 23 February , 2009 Below is the rather striking portrait of 'Orace which forms the frontispiece to Brig-General Ballard's 1931 book, Smith-Dorrien:
Anthony Pigott Posted 10 March , 2009 Share Posted 10 March , 2009 ... But there is also a hand written letter to Vaughan from Smith-Dorrien from June 1919. ... I don't have Vaughan's original response ... Vaughan's letter is reproduced in full in 'The Judgement of History', pp 40-42. Anthony

MJohnson Posted 16 March , 2009 Share Posted 16 March , 2009 Have always had a great deal of sympathy for Sir Horace and as a very new member find this thread of great interest . Whilst not being able to add to previous replies would anyone be interested in a letter he wrote to Frederic Coleman , author of From Mons to Ypres with French . Coleman is asking Smith Dorrien for confirmation that he ( Coleman) was with the fighting troops of the BEF at the commencement of the war .Coleman was an American who drove his own car ferrying De Lisle around the front , being one of the 25 members of the RAC who went to France with the BEF IN 1914 who their cars at disposal of the GHQ . My apologies if this has come up before . Maurice
