Pals,

A new Member has started a topic elsewhere on GWF about a relation in 10/Cheshire - see Identification of item around shoulder on WWI Uniform.

The relation was buried at Frevent Cemetery on 30th March 1916 so is likely to have died at 43rd CCS, but it is unclear whether this would be from wounds.

One of the outstanding issues we need to resolve is the movements of 10/Cheshires in March 1916.

Can one of the Cheshires experts help?

I'm starting this new Topic here, as the original topic has nothing in its title to draw in you Cheshires specialists!

Cheers,

Mark

Regimental History is no help seemingly thinking that nothing of interest happened in 1916 until 1 July. That's also the date that 25th Division History starts.

My Stockport researchees don't start getting killed until late April, which makes me think they were having a pretty quiet time of it, wherever they were.

Alexander Johnston's Diary indicates that the division were out of the line. Johnston (who later commanded the 10th) was on leave at the end of March. On March 17th 1916 he says "Heard in the afternoon to our dismay that we are probably to be out of the line another 3 weeks or more, as we are all sick to death of this doing nothing. Apparently the two other Divisions in the Corps, the 46th and 51st, which are now in the line have both had a long rest and so won't want relieving for some time."

Thanks Pals - this looks like it's going to be a tricky one

It's strange that there's so little info available on 25th Division before mid 1916 when they had been in France & Flanders since September 1915!

Cheers,

Mark

I think the information is out there, in diaries and letters (e.g. Johnston's and Whitty - 3rd Worcestershire ). The problem is that the divisional history (Kincaid-Smith) tends to give snapshots of various actions, and records casualties, honours etc. It is good for what it does, but has lots of gaps. When researching my book on Johnston (see above post) I had great difficulty with the 10th Cheshire. There appears to be few if any photographs of them, and I found the Regimental Museum unhelpful (hence they didn't get a free copy of the book as is my practice). Much of the stuff in Crookenden on the 10th came from Johnston's diary. If you find out anything on them I'd be delighted to hear from you.

My main research interest is in 20th (Light) and 33rd Divisions as my grandfather was in 12/KRRC and later 16/KRRC. Both of these units are well documented - I'm now starting to realise how spoilt I've been!

I shall try and catch the Cheshire's Regimental Museum expert who appears on Saturday mornings.

I'll report back on my progress

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks everyone for all your help. I have now found out Fred Trueman was a Batman. Perhaps (not as exciting as perceived) and looked after the horses, but more interesting to know a relative has the medal/s.

Edwin I have a photograph of approximately 195 men in the 10th Cheshire, but have been struggling for two days to get it into the gallery, but hopefully I manged to get it into topic.

Thanks once again

Alison

Thanks, and well done. Making sure these men are not forgotten is what this forum is all about!

I've read that the 10th battalion was regarded as having a "bad disciplinary record". Can anyone supply more detail on that?

Many thanks!

I'd be interested to know where you read that..... unless it was in my book "The Great War Diaries of Brigadier General Alexander Johnston". Johnston did not think much of them when he was Brigade Major, but after he took over command of the battalion they bucked up. You might think 'Well, he would say that, wouldn't he', but his getting a brigade after this certainly tells us that he did a good job with them.

Thanks Edwin - it may of course have been someone quoting from your book, but I'll have a think...

When actually did he take over command of the battalion?

28th August, 1916 according to his diary. Left the 10th on 13th Sept. 1917, taking over the 126th Inf. Bde.

Many thanks Edwin!

On a related note, I was surprised that Crookenden's history does not mention the Vimy Ridge action of May 1916 in which the 10th Bn lost so heavily...

The history of the Worcestershire Regiment (Stacke) covers it (Vimy Ridge May '16), but obviously from the 3rd Battalion's angle. Otherwise I have had to rely on the official history and the war diaries of the Wiltshire & Worcestershire which I have. I mean to get copy of the 10th Cheshire's war diary. If anyone has it I'd be glad to hear from them. The Battleground Europe vol. on Vimy mentions the Wiltshire and Worcestershire, but not (I think) the 10th.

Hello. Just stumbled on this forum as researching my Grandad who served in the 10th Cheshires (lived in Helsby, Cheshire) and was really amazed at the photo you displayed! Unable to recognise faces. Have you still got the photo? Many thanks. Lorraine

It's almost four years since the person who posted that photo last visited this forum, so you may not get a reply to your question, James.

  • 1 month later...

Just to update on this topic, I am the trustee of the Cheshire Roll of Honour, the 10th Cheshires have been my main point of research for many years. Since completing my WW1 masters my intention has been to write their story. Last month I signed a publishing contract and their story will be out in the middle of next year.

Some of the points mentioned above will be answered, the book will be chronologically written, from their inception through to being disbanded in June 1918 and becoming part of the SWB, with a final section on what happened to some of those who served, and their reunion dinners prior to WW2. There will at least two appendices, one listing all those who fell, in date order, which in those that were killed in action could be cross referenced with the particular action, and there will be with some indication the date they were wounded. The second is their awards, there will also be a section on the two men who were shot at dawn.

Yes he will be as he was awarded the M.M.

if would like to send me his picture I might be able to add that as well.

The action at Messines I have also created my own overlays using a variety of trench maps, one shows the starting positions. I will be photographing the area later in the spring.

Email address removed

If you look at the Cheshire Roll of Honour Facebook page you will see a post there with maps.

Hello,

I have an original named group photograph of the Officers of the 10th (Service) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. This was produced by the photographic studio of F Scovell and was taken at Ramillies Barracks, Aldershot in 1915 (probably on the same day as the Company image posted in this thread earlier).
If anyone would like a copy then PM me and I’ll oblige.

Is it ‘D’ company Mike? I bought a framed orginal a couple of years ago. I have researched all but two of the forty on it. If it’s another company I would really interested to see it.
