Alan Peacock Posted 7 July , 2005 Share Posted 7 July , 2005 I am looking for info. on the national borders around Lake Doiran in 1918. I am trying to find which country Lt. COL. Dan Burges won his VC. I have posted a question on this topic before and in spite of helpful replies I have not yet been able to locate which Balkan country the action took place. Alan. Max Posted 7 July , 2005 Share Posted 7 July , 2005 Lake Doiran straddles the modern border of FYRO Macedonia and Greece. It is also roughly 15 miles from the Bulgarian border. Macedonia was partitioned in 1913 and I think that Lake Doiran fell on the border of the Greek and Serbian sectors. Andy
eviltaxman Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Andy, I think you're right.... my geography of that area in '18 is sketchy at best, but I've heard/read something very close to what you've said. Alan, - you might be interested to know that I'm in the process of trying to get a plaque for Burges... read here ---> Burges plaque Les.

awakefield Posted 8 July , 2005 Share Posted 8 July , 2005 Alan Daniel Burges won his VC leading the 7th SWB up the lower slopes of the Grand Couronne. At the time this was on the Serbian side of the border - now in FYROM. Les Interesting to hear that you are planning to put up a plaque to Burges. As Chairman of the Salonika Campaign Society would you like me to mention this at out forthcoming Committee Meeting and post something in the Society's September newsletter?
