Dear reader.......

Today daughter had notification that she had 'failed' in her attempt to join the local PGCE course at Wolves Uni.

Many tears flowed as she had built all her hopes around taking one of the 16 places available.

We now wait on Keele Uni as her application is forwarded on automaticaly by the 'system'

No wonder then that there is a shortage of teachers if a city uni only offers 16 places on the required course.

I am a great believer in fate and judging by the total lack of support from wolves uni over the course of her degree, perhaps this 'failure' to secure a local placement is no bad thing. :)

Ho Hum, just when things start to settle down life throws another 'king-Dick' in the spokes.

Is it just me and my family dear reader who always gets the sh***y end of the stick?

Sometimes I do wonder if others are having the same trials and tribulations as 'we' do.

I guess you must dear reader, I guess you must.

If there is a God and he does listen to anything, perhaps he could send down a very tiny piece of good fortune to daughter to help her start the life she has dreamed of since she was about six.

Then she had teddies and dollies all lined up for a telling off from teacher and a test to follow. "Stop talking at the back"

I don't think she has had a day since without some sort of book in her hand. Not that she a 'geek' she's a designer label queen and likes to party. She has more shoes than Amelda whats her face.

Oh well fingers crossed I guess we just have to sit and wait.

First: what Marina said!

Second: 'King Dick spanners"! Do they still make 'em? I remember my Dad used to have several in the toolbox. Were they a Brum firm - I seem to recall?

Third: I wonder if the shortage of teacher places and the shortage of teachers you mention are down to - like doctors & nurses in the health service - no money in the right place to pay for 'em? No, ignore that, might be thought p*l*t*c*l :o

Sorry guys my fault went into course speak.

PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) is the required certificate to be able to teach children at secondry school level.

First you get your degree in whatever subject (s) you wish to specialise in then you have to take part in a 12 month full time course that is more practical , spending most of the time in class being assessed. At the end of that, if you pass the course, you get a stickyfoot saying you am a proper teechur :P

The PGCE is not required if you intent to teach at primary level.

Jim,

King-Dick spanners may well be a Brummy firm. No idea if they are still made however.

Just a very useful tool to have in yer box.

Money distribution and government seems to be miles apart. When you look at the millions they spout about going into the NHS, then have to sack staff and close wards through lack of money??????????????????

Seems the money is being spent on plush carpets and desks for over paid admin people.

Ah, the Scottish equivalent is the Teaching Diploma.

Only 16 places? That's incredible!

Marina,

Incredible? No just Wolverhampton Uni

We are told that Manchester Uni have the most places, goodness knows how many though.

The problem 'we' face is that once you are accepted on a particular PGCE course thats then where you start to teach. ie, do the course in Manchester....Get assessed in Manchester schools.

Still waiting on Keele (Staffordshire) not too far from us.

Keep us posted on your daughter's progress.

May the luck turn her way and she realise a life long dream.

If anyone is interested darling daughter got on the very next PGCE course at Wolves.

After her initial failure she sought some advice off one of the course tutors. That lady said working as a volunteer in a few selected local schools to get some experience could help. Well it turned out that those schools that she selected were in fact the schools that the PGCE course use anyway. So the tutor got great feed back off the schools in regards to daughters abilities and hey presto she was told to apply for the next PGCE course. She passed and is now a qualified teacher at a local (ish) secondry school. She loves it
