May and June 1918

MAY

 

May 1st: Told doctor I was alright. Discharged and went back to Battery.

 May 2nd: Got to gun line which has moved to right of Westouter (unclear)

 May 3rd: Last old gunner in the Battery, others away. Nothing doing much in morning. Firing hard in afternoon to night.

 May 4th: Sent to wagon line for a rest in morning.

 May 5th: Having a quiet time of it down wagon line

 May 6th: Ditto

 May 7th: Battery moving guns to bottom of Mont de Cats came out of action at night

 May 8th: On line of march for a rest. To (?) via (?)

 May 9th: Washing gun down lining gun (unclear) up. Complimented by Major on good work done on the 26th April

 May 10th: Ditto yesterday many Yanks here

 May 11th: Ditto yesterday

May 12th: Gun park inspection all OK

 May 13th: nothing doing. Got some new kit. Hot day.

 May 14th: went for bath (unclear- pencil smudged- ‘nice warm?’)

 May 15th:  loitering about nothing doing lovely weather

 May 16th: ditto yesterday, went out for work at night

 May 17th: went to St Omer for outing. Beautiful day. Enjoyed myself with Pal 

 May 18th: cleaning ammo and sight testing. Weather fine. 

 May 19th: Nothing doing. Wonder about next Whit Sunday. Nice day.

 May 20th: too hot to do anything. Germans over bombing as usual

 May 21st: ditto yesterday

 May 22nd: rifle practise on range. Enjoyed it. Enemy planes over night.

 May 23rd: rifle practise again, bruised shoulder where rifle kicked

 May 24th: very hot day nothing doing much

 May 25th: nice day. Talk about going into action. Germans bombing St Omer at night

 May 26th: went to (?) in afternoon for calibration of guns. AW at night

 May 27th: took guns on range. Blew screens down with (?) came away at night

 May 28th: On line of march. AW about. Long way from our last place.

 May 29th: cleaning gun down etc all day Germans over bombing at night

 May 30th: Went to workshop with ammunition wagon

 May 31st: working at Ordnance Workshops

 

JUNE

 

June 1st: ditto yesterday

 June 2nd: returned to Battery. Battery (?) at night. Looking after electric lighting set 

 June 3rd: went to ammo column with lighting set. Over bombing at night.

 June 4th: nothing doing. Cool weather.

 June 5th: ditto yesterday

 June 6th: Battery onto jumping (?) etc

 June 7th: Brigade Sports on. Battery most (winners?) in Brigade.

 June 8th: right section moved into action, talking up our section

 June 9th: moved to La Lovie Poperinge aerodrome grounds. Went into action at night to YPRES near asylums. Quiet move in.

 June 10th: Enemy sending gas shell over in early morning & shelling Ypres & behind position no firing.

 June 11th: putting camouflage up in front of guns as enemy has observation from Kemmel on right. Fired on Zero Line.

 June 12th: enemy firing shells round at irregular intervals otherwise quiet. Many of our horses up all (?)

 June 13th: Fired on enemy front line morning. Quiet all day. Enemy sent cloud gas over about midnight.

 June 14th: Very (?) on both sides. Retaliating on him. Our horses (?) and his very active.

 June 15th: heavy firing at Kemmel. Our sector quiet. Evening sending over gas shells by enemy.

 June 16th: relieved right section at right of Ypres asylum. Both sides aeroplanes active. Firing on (?) at night.

 June 17th: Rather quiet day. Heavy firing odd rounds. Enemy gas shells all round.

 June 18th: rather quiet. Shelling at night. Afternoon German shelling Ypres firing at 1 am

 June 19th: Quiet day in trenches Germans shelling back areas. Raid on tomorrow getting extra ammunition at night.

 June 20th: zero line 12:15am. Shelling German trenches Battery objective on right of (?) Lake 30 prisoners taken by us. Stopped firing at 1:20am all quiet. 

 June 21st: Germans retaliating for raid by shelling all over. Wounded at night 7:50 PM shell burst about a yard away. Sent dressings

 June 22nd: Am (or AW?) in hospital No.3 Australian CCS  (Casualty Clearing Station?) redressed in hospital. Esquelbecq near Bergues

 June 23rd: (Wound) dressed morning and night. Quiet time reading.

 June 24th: ditto yesterday

 June 25th: ditto yesterday

 June 26th: ditto yesterday

 June 27th: ditto yesterday

 June 28th: ditto yesterday

 June 29th: got job of gardener (?) 3rd Australian CCS. Hope to stick it for a bit. (unclear)

 June 30th: Went to Church service quite a change now I am out of the line. Very nice weather.
