What battalion are you talking about? My reading says that the Grenadier Guards were involved in the crossing of the Broembeek in early October and then went into billets.

1st battalion were in billets, as Ian points out, and conducting training according to their war diary, but they had a cross country running match against the Welsh Guards that day.

Do you mean 29 October 1914 rather than 1917?

The 1st Bn certainly held the line at Gheluvelt on 29th October, 1914. An officer later said that the attacking German forces reminded him of an emerging football crowd as they advanced shoulder to shoulder. The hard-pressed grenadiers were reinforced by some Gordon Highlanders and actually counter attacked. The bravery of these men completely misled the Germans who never realised just how thinly the line was held.
