Guest Hill 60 Posted 16 February , 2004 Share Posted 16 February , 2004 Recently I helped a lady with some family research and she gave me a couple of medals (1915 Star & Victory) she had knocking about at home (not from her family). I've never handled RN medals before, so I'm a little (actually a lot) confused with the numbering. The number is J.3940, can anyone tell me the significance of the J prefix please? Medals were to J.3940, A. Humphrey, AB, RN Many thanks.
Guest Jeff Floyd Posted 16 February , 2004 Share Posted 16 February , 2004 From 1908, the "J" prefix was for seamen (i.e., seamen, signal and telegraphist ratings) The "K" prefix was for stoker ratings The "L" prefix was for officers' stewards, cooks and boy servants The "M" prefix was for artisan and miscellaneous ratings (including engine room and electrical artificers and various skilled trades) In 1914, the "F" prefix was added to the mix for men of the Royal Naval Air Service.
