CWGC added the following 'new' WW1 casualty to its Debt of Honour database today – Wednesday 28th May.

Pte John Thomas William ROUGHTON

41020 3 Bn, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers

Died 05.09.19 Age 44

Buried: March (St Wendreda’s) New Burial Ground, Cambs, UK

NOT FORGOTTEN

Pte ROUGHTON’s case was put forward by GWF on 21.12.07 on behalf of member, chrisharley9.

My thanks to my naval friend Terry Hunt also drinking buddy for helping me with the search for the grave- strange how we nearly tripped over John

The story will follow later - off out to raise a glass to John & the other lads who for too many years were left out in the cold

On enlistment (16 May 1916 at Bury St Edmund's) John was a 40 year old farmer of Wimblington Rd, March - he has originally attested at March 8 Dec 1915. On 19 May 1916 he joined the East Surrey Regt. He served in France from 20 Nov 1916 until 17 July 1917 with him being transferred to the 8th Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers 17 Mar 1917. 26 Jun 1917 he was found to be suffering from PUO being admitted to 58 General Hospital at St Omer on the 27th. 17 Jul 1917 he was evacuated to the UK on the Hosptial Ship St David & the diagnosis had been changed to pleurisy. 18 Jul 1917 he was taken on strength of the 3rd Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He was discharged as being no longer physically fit for military service 18 Dec 1917. He died due to a lung abcess following a pleurisy operation at Wimblington Road, March his mother being present at the death
