AJ_Briant Posted 27 May , 2008 Share Posted 27 May , 2008 I am trying to find information about a possible family member: Sergeant JOHN THOMAS LANE L/6773, 2nd Bn., The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) who died on 18 December 1914. I would very much like to find his age. Extra info will be fantastic, if you know where I can find it. Any info you can throw back would be very helpful. Hambo Posted 27 May , 2008 Share Posted 27 May , 2008 AJ For the record the battalion entered the trenches at La Boutillerie with billets at at Rue Bataille or Rue La Bianche in November. During December the weather was very bad and the condition of the trenches was "appalling". There were a number of raids undertaken during the month the most sigificant being on the night of the 14th/15th On the 18th two companies of the battalion supported the Royal Warwicks "in a costly and unsuccessful attack" and on the morning of the 19th the Germans initiated a local armistice in order that the dead could be buried and the wounded removed. Despite the truce they lured and seven stretcher bearers and an officer close enough to their trenches to take them prisoner. From the regimental history Regards Hambo
