Morning CS,

Looked up 1901 census on Ancestry.

William H Fantham aged 5 lived with parents in Birmingham. No brother Ernest there. He was born in Aston in Birmingham. Mother Louisa, father William H. younger sister aged 1, called Phylisis (Phyllis I think!!)....

But, there was an Ernest Fantham aged 3 who had a brother William aged 7 from Bucks, but I would think this is not your pair as the one above is definitely William H Fantham (his dad has the same name).

From CWGC:

FANTHAM, WILLIAM HENRY

Initials: W H

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Coldstream Guards

Unit Text: 1st Bn.

Age: 19

Date of Death: 22/12/1914

Service No: 11083

Additional information: Son of Mrs. Louisa Richardson, of 50, Newport Rd., Balsall Heath, Birmingham.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Panels 2 and 3.

Memorial: LE TOURET MEMORIAL

looks like his mum had remarried by the time he died.

is this the other chap (??Edward??) how weird, their mum had the same forename.....

FANTHAM, EDWARD

Initials: E

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Lance Corporal

Regiment/Service: Coldstream Guards

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.

Age: 21

Date of Death: 20/09/1916

Service No: 13584

Additional information: Son of Timothy and Louisa Fantham, of 10, Ryland Place, Broad St., Birmingham.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: Div. 3. G. 2.

Cemetery: STE. MARIE CEMETERY, LE HAVRE

even more curious; the chap above is listed in 1901 census as "timothy E Fantham" with parents timothy and louisa in Birmingham.... (alas no brother William)... maybe cousins though....

strange old world...

all the best

susan.

Thanks

Ernest was in the Boer war in 1901. His son died in ww2 so the Fantham's of Bham certainly played their part

I too noticed Louisa on Edward and William - Im sure they will all be related somehow

Sorry

cannot help, I do not have the B'ham Weekly Posts Rolls of Honour copied for Jan/feb/March 1915. However searching through all the others I do have copied there are quite a few Coldstreamers mentioned.

(Oh **** what have I let myself in for  )
