Remembered Today:

ANZAC's in Ismalia

Recommended Posts

My Gt Uncle, Sjt John Wainwright MM was attached to the ANZAC HQ for most of the war as a RE signaller.

After Gallipoli and before Europe, he was stationed in Ismalia. These pictures show him and a pal taken in February 1916.

The ancient sculpture they are sitting on is quite distinctive, can anyone confirm its location, is it Ismalia?

The building is identified as ANZAC Signal Office February1916.

I would like to find out more about these locations. Does anyone know the address of the ANZAC office at this time as I would like to visit Ismalia and try and see if it and the sculpture are still there.

I realise it is a long shot but.......

John.

Have you tried the Australian War Memorial Web site - they have a decent data base you can search, they have the entire CEW Bean offical histories of WW1 downloadable in PDF format and you can email them asking for help too.

Thanks Andy for nudging this one, one of my long forgotten postings.

Thanks for the suggestion Shelldrake, my Gt Uncle is actually mentioned in Bean's diary as one of the men who helped put out a fire at Anzac on December 18th 1915. I have never checked the Official History, but I will now.

Cheers.
