Matt Dixon Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 What were these medals awarded to British troops for? Was it for a length of time spent in Belgium, or for performing some specific act?
Guest Jeff Floyd Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 Awarded by the commandant of the Army for acts of bravery against the enemy. The criteria were never any more specific than this, so the awards were often not well detailed. This was usually noted by citation in orders of the regiment, division, corps or army. Depending on the time, receiving an order for gallantry often brought a Croix de Guerre if the recipient did not already have one.
Matt Dixon Posted 13 February , 2004 Author Share Posted 13 February , 2004 The chap in question was in the South Wales Borderers and was MID'd. Do you think he would have been awarded the C de G for the action he was MID'd for?
paul guthrie Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 It's my impression that French & Belgian CDG were given to allied soldiers quite readily though some think it equivalent to VC or MOH it's not remotely so.
Guest Jeff Floyd Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 It is quite likely that a man who received an MID would also receive the Belgian Croix de Guerre for the same action.
hmsk212 Posted 13 February , 2004 Share Posted 13 February , 2004 Sometimes, but not always, these awards were mentioned in the London Gazette, have you looked on their site to see if your man's Belgium C. de G. is mentioned? Steve
Matt Dixon Posted 13 February , 2004 Author Share Posted 13 February , 2004 I have looked on LG but with no joy, and sadly his service record is missing, very sad, because it's the last peice of the family jigsaw.
Neil Burns Posted 14 February , 2004 Share Posted 14 February , 2004 You may want to try the unit history. There may be a list of citations for foreign awards. Take care, Neil
