Melissanthe Posted 12 May , 2008 Share Posted 12 May , 2008 Hi, I'm trying to find the details of the citations of the three American nurses who posthumously received the Silver Star in 2007 due to an oversight. So far I can only find any information about Linnie Leckrone and that is severely limited. Considering these were the first American woman to receive such a high valour award would have thought there would be more information. Any suggestions please? Terry_Reeves Posted 12 May , 2008 Share Posted 12 May , 2008 I presume you have seen the US Department of Defense article on this. Dr Sanders Marble who is mentioned in the article appears to have information on these nurses. His contact details are here: http://www.firstworldwar.bham.ac.uk/members/marble.htm Terry Reeves
Melissanthe Posted 14 May , 2008 Author Share Posted 14 May , 2008 Thanks for the link. I have been in touch with Dr Sanders Marble and he has been extremely helpful. For anyone interested the names of the three women who received the Citation star are: Linnie Leckrone Jane Rignel Irene Robar As only the first two have descendents alive today they are the only ones to receive the Silver Star. Michael Lowrey Posted 14 May , 2008 Share Posted 14 May , 2008 Worth noting that these weren't the first awards to U.S. nurses in WWI. Several have previously been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, a higher medal. See: http://www.homeofheroes.com/valor/1_Citati...ards_women.html Best wishes, Michael
