Squirrel, so true the way you say about a soldier never alone with his thoughts.

Keep the good stuff coming, mate.

A very high standard set so far

with some of the entries being realistic to the n'th degree.

I've enjoyed them all without exception

I've been toying with this subject for a few days now

and the result is

Alone

Over the top and through the wire,

the mist covering their progress.

Across the mud and into the mire,

the smoke cloud adding its darkness.

Mates try to stay in sight,

each looking out for the other.

Each watching to left and to right,

doing their best, staying together.

But shells respect no friendship;

they scatter at whim and at will.

None saw him fall behind and slip

back to the earth; being still.

He died alone in the storm and strife.

Quick, quiet, or immolation?

None knows. Except for his wife

reading the Padre's consolation.

Excellent, excellent.

Did we ever get anywhere with a book of MGWAT work - this one would be just right for publishing.

My masters insist on me working on books they can sell.

Nice work Michael. Immolation and consolation a difficult rhyme to pull off and you do it so well especially as there is the juxtaposition of the padre's and the association therefore with the heavenly and goodness and the the reference to the flames and of and the hell of war.

Squirrel didn't Chris Baker say he had some contacts? If I remember all the contributors were up for it.

This was the first thing that came to mind...

Lone survivor of a 1st C.M.R. Colt MG team as his position is overrun.

Sanctuary Wood, June 2nd, 1916.

Nice approach, Custer! Great entries everyone, I have one, but I'm not sure if I have time to make a better one...

GA

What a very good idea; how lonely and frightening such a situation must have been

Top marks to all the artists this month

Phew! Made it in time! Here it is;

"Alone"

French soldier on leave, realizing how far from the civilian life he has drifted during the war.

Amazing Landstrum, captures being "alone" perfectly.

Cheers!

Thanks for that :D I have seriously fallen in love with charcoal... no matter how many works I do, I always learn something new about this medium.

It's been a great month, if there are any other entries, now it would be a good time to submit them...

Who was planning to put up the June title?
