charlesmessenger Posted 27 January , 2003 Share Posted 27 January , 2003 Does anyone know what the above initials stood for? I have only come across one reference to it in Harvey Cushing's From a Surgeon's Diary 1915-1918. He was a US surgoen who worked in British base hospitals, but could not work out what it meant either. The RE is probably Royal Engineers, but what about `DO'? Paul Reed Posted 27 January , 2003 Share Posted 27 January , 2003 Director of Ordnance? Maybe a unit charged with the disposal of ammunition on the battlefields?
Terry Denham Posted 27 January , 2003 Share Posted 27 January , 2003 I have discovered this abbreviation listed on a web site about the defence of Hong Kong in WW2. It appears under Royal Engineers & 'Other Units' but annoyingly does not give its meaning. I have emailed the owner of the site for an answer & if I get a reply, I will post it here. Terry Denham Posted 28 January , 2003 Share Posted 28 January , 2003 I have heard back from the owner of the WW2 web site I mentioned but he does not know either and his one contact who could have known died this morning! He has a reference for an officer who was sent from Salonika to the WF 'to take over D.O.R.E.' His best guess was Duty Office Royal Engineers. Any more offers? charlesmessenger Posted 29 January , 2003 Author Share Posted 29 January , 2003 Thanks for your suggestions. Duty Office RE looks possible, but I'll keep hunting. Charles M
