Does anyone know what the above initials stood for? I have only come across one reference to it in Harvey Cushing's From a Surgeon's Diary 1915-1918. He was a US surgoen who worked in British base hospitals, but could not work out what it meant either. The RE is probably Royal Engineers, but what about `DO'?

I have discovered this abbreviation listed on a web site about the defence of Hong Kong in WW2.

It appears under Royal Engineers & 'Other Units' but annoyingly does not give its meaning.

I have emailed the owner of the site for an answer & if I get a reply, I will post it here.

I have heard back from the owner of the WW2 web site I mentioned but he does not know either and his one contact who could have known died this morning!

He has a reference for an officer who was sent from Salonika to the WF 'to take over D.O.R.E.'

His best guess was Duty Office Royal Engineers.

Any more offers?
