Chris, this is his Admiralty death record:

HIGHTON, FRANCIS W., ENGINEER CAPTAIN, R.N., 28-Sep-14, UK.

Note that he is shown as unassigned, maybe "he was on the beach," ie not employed. This would account for none commeroration.

Best wishes

does that mean he was retired or just between postings

Chris, with the little info you have it is impossible to be sure.

The obit. doesn't give age and states heart disease, so personally I favour retirement (or possibly long term sick as a long shot).

Best wishes

David

thanks for the quick reply - was there any naval facilities in Dundee that you can think of? - I know this one looks like a long shot, but any thing is worth a try

Thanks very much for your help but this case is going nowhere at the moment - no doubt I will stumble across more Scottish deaths so will probably need your help then

  • 7 months later...

Just reviewed this one - he had been recalled to naval service - his service record clearly states DD - discharged dead - he was on the strength of HMS President 10 Aug 1914 until his death
