per ardua per mare per terram Posted 26 March , 2008 Share Posted 26 March , 2008 Here's one of the threads that has discussed this book before: Chris Hobson, "Airmen Died in the Great War 1914-1918 - The Roll of Honour of the British and Commonwealth Air Services of the First World War" His service record might be in AIR 79, original documents, not online at Kew, stored in service number order. Starlight Posted 5 April , 2008 Share Posted 5 April , 2008 Cheers Starlight, Still a lot of money, just to find out about this one chap:-( I was hoping that some one here might do a look up for me, but it looks like it's gonna have to be a trip to the smoke, or see if my local libaray co obtain a copy for me to check Grant He does not get a mention in either "Airmen Died . . . " or "The Sky Their Battlefield". "Airmen Died.." only lists those men who died up until the end of the Great War. Sorry I could not be of more help. Dolphin Posted 5 April , 2008 Share Posted 5 April , 2008 I don't know if this is useful or not, but No 56 Sqn RAF was re-formed at Aboukir, Egypt, on 1 February 1920 by renumbering No 80 Sqn. It was equipped with Sopwith Snipes and remained in Egypt until disbanded on 22 September 1922 - aside from a detachment at San Stephano that remained until August 1923. grantowi Posted 5 April , 2008 Author Share Posted 5 April , 2008 Starlight, Thanks for looking for me, thats two books I can take off the list to check Gareth, Thanks for the info, so when he died (june 1920) he should have been No 80 sqn ? Dolphin Posted 6 April , 2008 Share Posted 6 April , 2008 Grant No, in June he was in No 56 Sqn, which was re-formed by re-numbering the existing No 80 Sqn. So the men (and aeroplanes) who were in No 80 Sqn on 31 January 1920 would have found themselves in No 56 Sqn the next day. Regards Gareth
