Simon R Posted 5 February , 2004 Share Posted 5 February , 2004 What's the quarry for CWGC headstones? And exactly what type of limestone is it?
Terry Denham Posted 5 February , 2004 Share Posted 5 February , 2004 There are many different stones used for CWGC headstones depending where you are in the world! The most common is Portland Limestone. More frequently nowadays Botticino Limestone is being used as it is harder wearing (it has a marble effect). You will also come across a large number made of a stone called Hopton Wood. However, you will see granite headstones in many places and some made from slate. You will also see various reddish and green colour sandstones used. CWGC has often used a local stone as a matter of policy where it was more harmonious with existing headstones. Use the Search facility as pictures of various different stones used have already been posted on the Forum.

Guest Pete Wood Posted 5 February , 2004 Share Posted 5 February , 2004 Simon, I know you specifically said stones - but don't forget that, in some places, that headstones were not used. Some of the Gallipoli graves for example.
