Where can I find info on the above mentioned ship? Gt gt grandfather W.Clare served aboard (Plymouth 1883) and his son later served with the Devons on the Somme. Any help would be most appreciated. HERITAGE PLUS Posted 4 February , 2004 Share Posted 4 February , 2004 Chris HMS Northumberland was a Minotaur Class Broadside ironclad Battleship launched at Millwall Docks on 17 April 1866. It was the fifth vessel so named. 6621 Tons (Displacement 10,800 tons) - 28 guns - 400 feet long She served in the Channel Fleet from 1868-90. Laid up in Reserve from 1891-98 at Devonport She was converted into a Stokers' Training and Depot ship and towed to Chatham in 1898. Re-named Acheron in 1904 becoming Coal Hulk C8 in 1909. Renumbered as Coal Hulk C68 in 1926 and Sold in 1927 as Hulk 'Stedmound' and moved to Dakar. Two men from the ship were awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal. F.Barnes for saving life in an incident at Devonport on 3 Oct. 1883 and Lt.R.B.Farquhar for saving a life at sea on 4 Oct.83.
