Guest woolley Posted 3 February , 2004 Share Posted 3 February , 2004 My grandfather Herbert Charles Cox is entered as Pay Corps on my mother's birth certificate in 1916. In 1917 there is an entry in the Croydon Advertiser that he died on May 12 as a signaller in the Royal Garrison Artillery. The War Graves Commission have no entry for him and there is no entry in the military deaths register in the Family Records centre. I have checked the medal cards and could not see any entries that matched. I have been stuck on this for some time. Can anybody suggest where to look next? rflory Posted 3 February , 2004 Share Posted 3 February , 2004 He is not listed in the RGA volume of "Soldiers Died in the Great War", in the Honor Roll of "The Royal Artillery War Commemoration Book", or in "Croydon and the Great War." christine liava'a Posted 3 February , 2004 Share Posted 3 February , 2004 Have you checked the regular deaths for 1917, and the probate indexes? Even if he didn't leave a will, there should have been an intestacy. You can find them on microfiche at big libraries National probate calendars 1858-1943. [microform] Publisher: [Winchester, England] : [Hampshire Record Office], [1995?] Description: 5772 microfiches.
Chris_Baker Posted 3 February , 2004 Share Posted 3 February , 2004 If he died without seeing overseas service, he will not figure in the medal entitlement records.
