Guest Nellym Posted 2 February , 2004 Share Posted 2 February , 2004 Could anyone enlighten me? My GG Uncle served with the Grenadier Guards, 1st battalion, wounded in action on March 15th 1916. He died of his wounds in November 1916. Where would he have been in March 1916 when he recieved his injuries, he was buried at Grove Town cemetry in November during the Somme offensive, any help appreciated NellyM. Paul Reed Posted 3 February , 2004 Share Posted 3 February , 2004 At this time the Guards were holding the line in the 'Canal Bank Sector' at Ypres, close to the Yser Canal and village of Boesinghe. There are dead from the Guards from this period in Brandhoek Cemetery, so I suspect your relative was admitted to one of the Casualty Clearing Stations there. There is a little about the Grenadiers on my website at: http://battlefields1418.50megs.com/regiment001.htm
Geoff Parker Posted 4 February , 2004 Share Posted 4 February , 2004 According to the histories, The Guards Div moved into the Ypres Salient on 16th March 1916 to relieve 6th Div. 1st GG moved into trenches I.12.a to I.12.c on 20th March 1916 and were immediately shelled causing 6 killed and 14 wounded. Prior to the 16th March the Division including the 1st GG appear to have been quite a distance from the front lines. Geoff
