Flying Officer Young, DFC & Bar, died 13th July 1921 aged 22 and buried at St. Chad's Churchyard, Prees.

Can anyone help with identifying the circumstances of his death and how he earned his DFC & Bar?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Lt H N Young was a pilot in No 8 Sqn RAF, flying the Armstrong Whitworth FK 8 on army co-operation duties; No 8 Sqn often worked with the Tank Corps. He was mentioned in the RAF Communique of 7 May 1918 for an action where he and Lt H B Davies, his observer, were attacked by two enemy aircraft and shot one down.

He was also mentioned in a Communique for an action on 28 May when, again flying with Lt Davies, he was attacked by 7 enemy aircraft while on a bombing raid. Again, they managed to shoot down one of their attackers.

He flew AWFK 8 B3382, with 2Lt L W Norman as observer, when it was damaged by anti-aircraft fire on 29 May.

On 2 June he was in AWFK 8 D5074 with Lt Davies when they were hit by anti-aircraft fire and forced to land near Bresle.

On 10 August he was in AWFK 8 E8821 with Lt Davies on a tank contact patrol when he was wounded and forced to land.

His DFC is listed in the Communique for 17-23 June, and the bar in the edition for 26 August - 1 September.

The post-1919 rank of Flying Officer on his tombstone suggests that he stayed in the RAF after the War.

I hope that this helps a little.

Gareth

Citation for his DFC, London Gazette #30827, dated 3rd August 1918.

Lt. Harry Bowen Davies (Observer).*

Lt. Horace Norman Young (Pilot).*

Whilst engaged during the past month on a bombing raid they observed a large amount of rolling stock at a railway siding. The pilot, Lt. Young, brought his machine down to within 2,000 feet from the ground after releasing his bombs, and Lt. Davies then made an exhaustive reconnaissance of the area, notwithstanding an intense concentration of anti-aircraft and machine-gun fire which the enemy brought to bear upon the machine.

Whilst engaged on this reconnaissance numerous groups of enemy troops engaged on the railway trucks were scattered in all

directions by fire from the aeroplane. On completion of this duty these two officers located a very active enemy anti-aircraft

battery, and immediately directed the attention of our artillery thereto, which resulted in silencing it, consequent on an explosion which followed a salvo. Courage, determination, and ability are the marked qualities of these officers.

NOTE.—The asterisk denotes that the announcement of the reward has been published in the London Gazette, No. 30775, dated 2nd July, 1918, without the statement of service.

The citation for the Bar to his DFC, London Gazette #30989, dated 2nd November 1918.

Lt. Horace Norman Young, D.F.C.

In a recent engagement this officer displayed marked courage and determination. He bombed and silenced an anti-tank battery, and then attacked some motor transport, destroying four lorries. Later on he engaged with machine guns enemy troops and transport, causing a stampede, returning to our lines with a most valuable report as to the position of our troops. Unfortunately, on the following day he was seriously wounded.

(D.F.C. gazetted 2nd July, 1918.)

Hope this helps.
