Jax49 Posted 9 February , 2008 Posted 9 February , 2008 I am trying to help a relative of mine research her grandfather Lance corporal Thomas James McCance, 8th Lancashire fusiliers no 36750. On the birth certificate of his son Hugh in sept 1916, his address was 74 Birley st. Pendleton. We cannot find him on any census'. He was married in Salford in 1904 father Hugh. Any help would be wonderful. Jacqui
grantowi Posted 9 February , 2008 Posted 9 February , 2008 Jacqui, This is the only Hugh McCance, that I can find. He's 10 in 1891, (so that would make him 23 in 1904 when his son got married) so I guess you can rule him out Not much of a start Grant
Jim_Grundy Posted 10 February , 2008 Posted 10 February , 2008 Jacqui Ask at your local county archive office to see if the 'Absent Voters Lists' have survived for the area. These lists record a lot of information, being used to register men away from their homes to vote from 1918 onwards. They're a bit hit and miss but should give full name, address, number, rank and unit at the time of registration. If you haven't got the address, it'll mean a bit of trawling through but they're an excellent source of information. Good luck with your research. Regards, Jim
Jax49 Posted 10 February , 2008 Author Posted 10 February , 2008 Many thanks to you both for the reply. It is looking like he could of hailed from Ireland or Scotland. We were hoping his records may have solved the mystery. Any other help would be wonderful Jacqui

grantowi Posted 10 February , 2008 Posted 10 February , 2008 Jacqui, Had a look for his birth registration (military and civilian) and only came up with a Thomas born in Aberdeen in 1844 - which would put him at 60 for the marriage and 72 for the birth :-( I think your proberly right either in Scotland or Ireland Have you tried the local paper for Salford in 1904, for a wedding announcment? Happy hunting Grant
Jax49 Posted 12 February , 2008 Author Posted 12 February , 2008 Thanks for your replies. Checking the wedding announcements may be good option thank you. This could be a long one!! Jacqui
grantowi Posted 12 February , 2008 Posted 12 February , 2008 Jacqui, If your going to look at the papers, check for a birth anouncment as well, might give you some more info. Grant
