Jonathan Saunders Posted 31 January , 2004 Share Posted 31 January , 2004 U-15 sailed from Heliogoland on 6 Aug with 10 other U-boats with intention of running a line towards Scapa Flow, and eventually attacking any capital ships they encountered. 8 Aug the 9 remianing U-boats (one had turned back) encountered three dreadnoughts that scattered. U-15 had got off a torpedo that missed, I am not sure if other torpedos were fired. The U-boats took up station just off the Orkneys on the morning of 9 Aug. At about 03:40am the Birmingham sited U-15 in the mist. Heavy banging, suggetsing repairs to the engine were heard. The Birmingham rammed her once and had time to turn her guns on her whilst turning about and raming teh U-15 amidships. The U-15 was cut in half. There were no survivors. mcderms Posted 2 February , 2004 Share Posted 2 February , 2004 If you want to talk to THE expert on Orkneys wrecks, the man who basically founded the Scapa Flow diving industry can be found at www.ScapaFlow.com John is the man who discovered HMS Hampshire and knows more about wrecks north of Aberdeen than anyone else I know.
