youngwebb Posted 31 January , 2008 Share Posted 31 January , 2008 Can anyone help me to identify the rank of this customs house officer in the uniform he wore during WWI?
pbrydon Posted 31 January , 2008 Share Posted 31 January , 2008 From memory the ranks were: APO- Assistant Preventative Officer P.O. Preventative Officer C.P.O. Chief Preventative Officer I think one strip is an A.P.O. These ranks were from the 1960s and 1970s so I cannot be sure that these ranks applied as early as WW1. There is of course a Customs Museum in Liverpool whom I am sure would be able to help you Regards P.B.

Guest Posted 16 October , 2019 Share Posted 16 October , 2019 (edited) Hi there. I know this is a very old post but I thought it was adding to this. Up until 1947 one ring actually denoted the rank of a Preventive Officer. Up until then Assistant Preventive Officers wore no rank at all. It was only after 1947 that APOs wore a single ring and POs wore two rings. I have attached a photograph of the letter that requested the change in rank representation dated 1947. I hope this helps! Coincidentally, do you have a date for this photograph? Ieuan Edited 16 October , 2019 by Guest
