A Birmingham Pal I am researching died of sickness in February 1918 at Fir Vale Hospital, Sheffield. Would this have been a special hospital for certain types of diseases?

Fir Vale was the old Workhouse Hospital, since renamed the Northern General Hospital. Although there are modern bits added, the main long corridor still gives a workhouse impression. I've visited people there, and if cheerful surroundings are an aid to recovery, well, "abandon hope...."
