stiletto_33853 Posted 6 January , 2008 Share Posted 6 January , 2008 Wonder if anyone could tell me about this chap, Thuell, William J., 2nd Lieut., 45th Squadron, 22/10/16 mentioned on the Arras Flying Services Memorial. Of particular interest is the manner of his death and his former unit. Many thanks. Andy
Dolphin Posted 6 January , 2008 Share Posted 6 January , 2008 Andy 2Lt William Johnson Thuell must have been commissioned in the RFC, as no previous regiment is listed in Airmen Died. He was the observer in Sopwith 1½ Strutter 7786 of No 45 Sqn RFC, flown by 2Lt Oliver John Wade (formerly 9th Bn, Royal West Kent Regiment) when they were killed in action on 22 October 1916. They had left on an Offensive Patrol at 1015, and were shot down over Les Boeufs at 1050 by Ltn Erwin Böhme of Jasta 2. 7786 was the fifth of Ltn Böhme's eventual 24 victories before he was killed while attacking an AW FK 8 of No 10 Sqn RFC on 29 November 1917. I hope that this helps Gareth
stiletto_33853 Posted 6 January , 2008 Author Share Posted 6 January , 2008 Gareth, Many thanks for the quick reply. Reason for asking is that I can only find one W.J. Thuell on the CWGC site, he appears in a memorial book and it looks like an Artist's Rifle cap badge.
