Gunby's book is excellent. He actually spoke with Gwilym Lewis. There is also a book about its one time commander Maj RS Dallas DSO DSC* entitled "Australian Hawk Over The Western Front" published by Grub St and very well reviewed. ;)

David,

Dallas took command of 40Sqn on 1st April 1918.

There was a large article on 40 in C&C a good few years ago. It spanned two issues IIRC. Sorry I can't be more specific on the time.

40Sqn seems to have had a wide variety of characters pass through.

Oh, and I can thoroughly recommend the Dallas book. The research was ably assisted by very reputable types.

David, Award for DALLAS - have more on him if you wish ;

DALLAS Roderic S N/E Flt.S/Lt. RNAS 85T026 N/E

Vice Admiral Dover 06.09.16 Gazetted

R.N.A.S. Officers - No. 1 Wing Dunkirque 1st Half 1916 DSC

Flight S/Lieutenant Dallas, in addition to performing consistently good work in reconnaissances and fighting patrols since December, 1915, has been brought to notice by the Vice Admiral, Dover Patrol, for the specially gallant manner in which he has carried out his duties.

Amongst other expolits is the following :- on the 21st May, 1916, he spotted at least 12 hostile machines, which had been bombing Dunkirque. He attacked one at 7000 feet, and then attacked a second machine close to him. After reloading, he climbed to 10,000 feet, and attacked a large hostile two-seater machine off Westende. The machine took fire, and nose dived seawards. Another enemy machine then appeared, which he engaged and chased to the shore, but had to abandon owing to having used up all his ammunition.

Many thanks for the additional information about Dallas.

Thanks for the tip about the CCI journals on 40 Sqn. I wonder if anyone else knows which ones?

With best wishes,

David
