Rory Reynolds Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 Hi all Photo is of my late grandfather and his aeroplane. Could anyone identify what sort of plane this was as well as comment on any markings perceived. Thanks Rory
Dolphin Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 Rory It looks like he's sitting in an unarmed Sopwith Pup at a training unit. The aeroplane is finished in standard PC10 dope on the upper-surfaces (a brown colour, with a tinge of olive when new - the colour varied from batch to batch) with the British red-white-blue (from the inside) national roundel on the fuselage side. The under-surfaces would have been clear doped, resulting in a creamish colour. There appears to be something written on the fuselage below the cockpit, but it's not clear. Is it more legible on the original? Regards Gareth
Rory Reynolds Posted 17 December , 2007 Author Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Hi Gareth Thanks for that. I've had a go at the original under the magnifying glass and it looks like it could be: TB (at the top) with S.9.8.9.3.7 (on the second row) Don't know if these numbers mean anything? Dolphin Posted 17 December , 2007 Share Posted 17 December , 2007 Rory Sorry, the numbers don't mean anything to me; they're not an aeroplane serial number. With luck, someone else will know what they are. Regards Gareth
