Pinky Manchesters Posted 15 December , 2007 Share Posted 15 December , 2007 Does anyone know of a link with 63 Sqn and Batumi on the Black Sea. My Grandfather served in 63 Sqn in Mesopotamia. We believe he went to Batum whilst it was under Imperial Russia. We know he joined 63 RFC in 1917 and travelled via Cape Town arriving in Basra in Aug 1917. Also know he was in Baghdad on his 18th birthday 29 June 1918. He was transferred to the RFC whilst in Mesopotamia we believe. Any info on how this transition occurred would be appreciated. Did 63 Sqn RFC transfer as 63 Sqn RAF? Thanks in advance. John
Dolphin Posted 16 December , 2007 Share Posted 16 December , 2007 John No 63 Sqn RFC was formed at Stirling on 4 July 1916. It was based at Basra in Mesopotamia in August 1917,and stayed in that theatre until after the Armistice, having become No 63 Sqn RAF on 1 April 1918. By February 1919 it was at Baghdad, with detachments at Ramadi, Kazvin, Bushire, Kermanshah, Mosul and Kirkuk. The squadron was disbanded on 29 February 1920, and formed the base to re-establish No 30 Sqn, which had been reduced to a cadre at Baghdad on 9 April 1919. I hope that this helps Gareth
